Champaign Public Library Grand Opening
by David
Jan 12, 2008
WOW! Champaign has a brand spankin' new Public Library and I played for the toddler crowd on Sunday afternoon. What a blast- music going, kids dancing around and clapping, people shoulder to shoulder everywhere. We're so fortunate to live in an area that supports such an amazing venture. Rock on!

A Full Day
by David
Nov 10, 2007
So today, Daniel (my son) served at the 7am Mass at HolyCross and then we're going to a paintball event with Trailblazers; a young mens catholic leadership group that we're involved with. That'll go from 10am-2pm. Then, I'm in the studio at 3:15pm-10pm recording with Mark Rubel(Producer),Matt Stewart (Lead guitars, and guitars), then Chad Dunn is coming in around 6:30 tonite to do percussion on "Sacrament Stomp", which is a memory song for children I'm recording. So, I bet I'll feel all of my 46 years by 10:30 tonite! I hope to post some pix from the studio session so keep your eyes peeled.
Peace-David

So here's the promised pix. First, we left paint ball early . Suffice it to say, not Daniels cup of tea, which is fine with me. But later I had a full day in the studio and here's the pix. Matt Stewart and Chad Dunn are amazing musicians and good people to be around. We had a very productive day. By the way- most if not all of Chads' percussion is hand-made by himself!

Peace-David

Studio sessions Begin!

Nov 2, 2007
November 1, All Saints Day: Pogo Studio: Champaign Illinois:
Day 1: Mark Rubel and Josh Quirk & I recorded basic tracks last nite for the 7th K4J (Kids For Jesus) cd. It is always a blast to be at Pogo and with Mark who I've known for decades. There's always new toys and jokes! The new toy is a 21 ft grand piano! I'll upload a picture of it after todays session. It's beautiful and amazing. Mark told me to play one low note with the sustain pedal pressed down and that note lasted... and lasted... for a VERY long time! I believe he's just sampling this piano right now but WOW! It was beautiful!
Josh is a very well known studio drummer in town , in addition to being in several really good, fun bands. He's played drums on the last 2 K4J cds (at least).
We got a good jump on 2 new songs for this record:"Celebrate Life", a pro-life surfer song, and "Sacrament Stomp", a memory song about the Sacraments! Josh played a cool pattern on the rim of his drums with his sticks in the verses of Stomp and that worked out well. All in all, we had a lot of fun, applied ourselves in a relaxed but focused way and had a good productive night.

More tomorrow!

Illinois Homecoming Tailgate 2007
by David Howie
Oct 31, 2007
Greetings fellow travelers! So last Saturday Oct. 27th I played a 2 hour tailgate event for the St.John's Catholice Newman Center Tent!
All week I had been watching the weather forecasts becuase here in Illinois it had been reaching into the 30's overnite. Oh yeah, the gig was at 9am! So I'm loading in at 7:20am and it isn't raining! It DID however rain all night the night before so it was a little muddy but trucks with road-pack arrived and made the areas around the tents much more traversable (sp?). Once inside the tent it was actually dry in the are I was going to be in, and they had these very cool heat vents blowing warm air into the tent, so by the time I was sound-checking I was comfortable as could be.

Most places I play I do at least 75% original material or more, so this is a rare gig at the tailgate where I can focus on covers and slipping in an albums worth of my stuff. I date myself here, cause I do covers like "It Never Rains In California", Brown-eyed Girl, Instant Karma,Who'll Stop The Rain, etc. Lots of 70's era music. Some of the stuff I grew up on, and a couple of obscure things that not many people have heard of. All in all, it was a great day that got sunnier as time passed, so that by gametime (11:00am) the sun was out and it was gorgeous! Perfect day for the Illini to (hopefully) clinch a bowl game with a victory over Ballstate!
There was a very kind gentleman named Joe, who took pix of the event, and he assured me he'd mail me a disc. When he does, I'll throw some on the site so you can take it in visually!
Anyway- getting ready to go into Pogo Studios Thursday,Nov. 1 and begin my 7th record of K4J (Kids For Jesus) songs and I can't wait. Will try to include a studio log next week!
Thanks for stopping by and please support live, independent music!
David Thanks to Joe Hercik for the use of the photos!
